The project at a glance

Asobo Studio is a video game development company founded in 2002. It employs 300 people and remains the leading French independent studio for PC and console game development. The studio has collaborated with major names in entertainment, including Microsoft, Disney Pixar, Universal Fox, Hasbro, Ubisoft, and Focus.

In 2016, Asobo Studio created HoloForge Interactive, a business division entirely dedicated to the design of professional applications in Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR).

Today, these technologies have reached a functional level of maturity. However, human factors remain a barrier that must be understood to create immersive systems that are simple and adapted to the end user.

This collaborative program aims to define best practices for the adoption of Mixed Reality through the optimization of Human Factors and User Experience (UX).

To achieve this, the program will:

  • Draft a state-of-the-art review regarding the use of these technologies and human capabilities;

  • Design new methodologies based on scientific research in order to:

    • Define User-Centered Design (UCD) guidelines for Mixed Reality applications;

    • Evaluate the benefits of Mixed Reality technology on user performance.

The goals are to:

  • Design a global, reusable methodology tailored to the intended use and the user’s capabilities;

  • Define standards and best practices through a User-Centered Design approach;

  • Accelerate the adoption of Mixed Reality by making it more accessible.

The results of this project are intended to be shared in the form of a White Paper, with the aim of:

  • Transmitting this new knowledge to all stakeholders in the ecosystem;

  • Raising awareness about User-Centered Design in immersive technologies.

CATIE contribution

CATIE will contribute to:

  • The transfer of knowledge from research laboratories, adapting it to HoloForge’s needs;

  • The proposal of methods for gathering user requirements and evaluating the developed solutions.
