The project at a glance
The ambition of the project is to acquire, at high frequency and low cost, data along the New Aquitaine coastline on the coastal strip in order to characterize its intra-annual changes and thus improve our understanding of the processes at work in coastal dynamics.
To achieve this, two main data sources will be mobilized in this project: video data from the public coastal camera network in New Aquitaine and citizen images taken with smartphones.
The project has multiple objectives:
-
Study the potential for exploiting the opportunity network formed by the existing public coastal cameras along the New Aquitaine coast;
-
Define and monitor over time environmental descriptors such as beach width, coastline position, tidal pools (baïnes), subtidal bars, or vegetation boundaries;
-
Enable every citizen to become a privileged observer of coastal changes;
-
Raise public awareness about risk culture and the mobile nature of the coastal strip.
During contacts with various stakeholders, the BRGM highlighted a need related to the missions of its objectives contract and thus decided to undertake this research work, which should lead to improved knowledge of the intra-annual coastal changes of the former Aquitaine region, for effective transfer towards technical assistance and support for managers and decision-makers.
Furthermore, the project will be carried out in consultation with local coastal management strategy leaders in the former Aquitaine to meet their objectives regarding risk awareness development (Axis 1 of the action programs).
The project will bring together the expertise of BRGM and ONF, both in knowledge of the Aquitaine coastline changes and in setting up information and awareness panels, through work conducted within the framework of the Aquitaine Coast Observatory, as well as CATIE’s expertise in the digital domain.
CATIE contribution
CATIE will be involved in the architecture, structure, data storage, cybersecurity, and algorithmic image processing.
In addition, CATIE will work on the citizen-tools interface as well as on human and cognitive factors for the development of the dedicated application.
